Supporting our libraries…

I hope that each of you have beautiful memories of going to the library as a child. There is a special joy in picking out that big picture book and proudly carrying it to the desk for check out. There is anticipation of getting it home and to reading it with a loved one. Then there is the lesson of returning it in a timely fashion which offers a new opportunity with a new book.

We are blessed to have community libraries where we and our families can explore the remarkable world of books, and more! They have been here for many years, supported by our county and city tax dollars, contributing to our quality of living in Alamance County. Now, the libraries need our help. Tax dollars don’t stretch as far as they used to and hard choices have to be made.

You can help preserve the excellent quality of services at the library in many ways…

Donate gently used books and audio visual materials at any branch for the Friends of the Library book sales.

Volunteer to help with the book sales. Each hour donated resulted in $23.00 for funds raised during last month’s sale.

Consider a donation to the Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries. Our mission is to support literacy efforts in the community, mostly through the libraries, but occasionally through other programs like the Children’s Museum and Christmas Cheer.

These actions promote a stronger library system which sounds very serious and all mature, but in reality our goal is just the warm, cuddly experience of a good bed time story.

Thank you,

Lynne Taylor,

President of the Friends

NC Friends recognizes local Friend
Monday, 29 October 2012 14:52

At their October 2012 meeting in Greensboro, the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries (FONCPL) recognized Alamance Friends Of the Library board member Miriam Pace with a Frannie Ashburn Volunteer of the Year award, which is given to outstanding volunteers on the statewide level. Miriam received both a recognition certificate and a check for our local Friends organization. At Miriam's request, the Alamance Friends board voted unanimously to donate the money to the Alamance County Public Libraries to be used as needed.

Congratulations to Miriam, along with our thanks for all her hard work.

Francis B. Reid Award given to Alamance Friends of the Library
Thursday, 05 January 2012 13:57
It was announced in October that Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries was a 2011 recipient of the prestigious Frances B. Reid award. Frances B. Reid was the guiding force in organizing and establishing the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries (FONCPL) organization in 1980.

The criteria that enabled our group to be singled out were:
  •  The success of Alamance Reads-"The Pleasure Was Mine";
  •  Book selection committee was diverse and incorporated a blog;
  •  Significant savings in cost of books allowed us to sell at a reduced rate selling 500 more books than in previous years;
  •  Used social networking (Facebook and Twitter), created project website and new Friends website;
  •  Held great supporting events-writing workshop, BBQ square dance, craft project, community mural.
Thanks again to all the volunteers that made this happen. We could not have done it without you!
